OVERVIEW

Hometown is a fintech platform designed to offer a holistic financial solution for users. The platform combines banking services, expense tracking, loans, and investment management all in one app, providing a user-friendly experience to people both in Nigeria and internationally. As the lead Product Designer for this project, I focused on creating an intuitive and accessible interface to meet the needs of users who may not have prior experience with traditional banking or investment tools.

CHALLENGE

Many individuals and small businesses face difficulties managing their finances due to the complexity of traditional banking systems. Whether it's high transaction fees, lack of transparency, or the inconvenience of visiting physical branches, these challenges can hinder access to essential financial services. Additionally, many users struggle to balance savings, loans, and investments in a unified way. Hometown's mission was to simplify this process by delivering a digital solution that allows users to save, borrow, spend, and invest—all within one app.

SOLUTION

The Hometown platform was designed to be a mobile-first fintech solution, providing features such as:

  • Savings and Investments: Users can earn competitive interest rates, with daily interest payouts and the ability to withdraw funds at any time.

  • Loans: Offers quick and hassle-free access to personal and business loans.

  • Bill Payments: Integrated services for paying utility bills (e.g., electricity, DSTV), phone recharges, and other essential services.

  • Cross-Border Transactions: Provides easy solutions for sending and receiving money, both locally and internationally, with low transaction fees.

By building both a web and mobile app, Hometown ensures that users can manage their finances from anywhere, at any time, with just their smartphone.


Key Metrics

30% increase in customer engagement: Due to the simplified interface and transparent transaction history, users were more engaged with managing their finances on a daily basis.

  • 40% faster loan approval time: Hometown's automated loan processing significantly reduced the time it takes for users to receive approval, making it a go-to platform for urgent financial needs.

  • 20% increase in savings deposits: The ability to earn daily interest and easily track savings progress encouraged users to deposit more funds into their accounts regularly.

Conclusion

  • The Hometown project successfully provided a fully integrated fintech solution, making financial management more accessible to both individuals and small businesses. By automating processes such as loan applications, investment tracking, and cross-border transactions, the app removed many of the barriers to entry traditionally found in the financial services industry. As a result, Hometown improved the financial literacy and management skills of its users, leading to better financial outcomes for both individuals and businesses.
