OVERVIEW

Luca is a financial management tool designed to streamline bookkeeping and expense tracking for small to medium-sized businesses (SMEs). As the lead Product Designer, I was responsible for creating a seamless, user-friendly experience that would allow business owners to track income, expenses, and overall financial health efficiently. The platform is tailored to business owners who may not have the resources for full-time accountants, offering automated solutions for tracking cash flow and managing daily transactions.

CHALLENGE

Many SMEs struggle with traditional bookkeeping methods, which are often time-consuming and prone to errors. These inefficiencies can lead to financial mismanagement, such as missed payments or inaccurate accounting, making it difficult for businesses to assess their financial status. The primary challenge was to design a platform that simplified these complex tasks and provided real-time financial insights, without requiring accounting expertise from users.

SOLUTION

Luca was developed as a one-stop financial tool for SMEs. It provides:

  • Expense Tracking: Automates the process of recording expenses, helping businesses categorize transactions and avoid mistakes.

  • Invoicing System: Allows users to generate and send professional invoices directly from the platform.

  • Real-Time Financial Insights: Offers instant reports on profit and loss, cash flow, and financial health.

  • Collaboration Tools: Enables business owners to work efficiently with accountants and bookkeepers by sharing data securely.

  • Mobile Accessibility: Designed for business owners on the go, with mobile features that are as robust as the web platform.

Design Process

I took a user-centered design approach, conducting extensive research to understand the needs of small business owners and bookkeepers. This included:

  • Interviews and Surveys: Engaged with a variety of business owners to identify key pain points, such as difficulty tracking expenses and the complexity of traditional accounting tools.

  • Wireframing and Prototyping: Developed multiple iterations of the platform's user interface using tools like Figma and Framer, focusing on simplicity and clarity.

  • User Testing: Conducted multiple rounds of testing to ensure ease of use and functionality. Feedback from real users shaped the design, making it intuitive for non-experts.

Financial Features & Analysis

  • Revenue Tracking: The platform tracks all revenue streams, offering businesses the ability to monitor incoming payments and understand their profitability.

  • Expense Categorization: Automates expense classification, simplifying tax preparation and improving financial oversight.

  • Sales Insights: Provides detailed financial reports, including weekly and monthly sales analyses, allowing businesses to forecast growth and manage their budgets better.

These features have helped businesses save 30% of their time spent on manual bookkeeping, while improving accuracy in financial reporting.

Key Metrics

  • 50% increase in financial accuracy: By automating data entry and tracking, users reported fewer errors in their bookkeeping.

  • 30% reduction in time spent: The platform saved businesses significant time by automating repetitive tasks, allowing them to focus more on growth.

  • 80% user retention: The intuitive design and real-time insights kept users engaged and using the platform long-term.

Conclusion

  • Luca improved financial transparency for small businesses, providing them with critical insights into their cash flow and financial health. By automating key processes like expense tracking and invoicing, the platform made managing finances more accessible to SMEs that could not afford full-time accountants. With Luca, businesses were empowered to make better financial decisions, ultimately leading to improved operational efficiency and increased profitability.
